WHAT A DECADE and a half it has been—both for the dental industry overall and for the Incisal Edge 40 Under 40, which has been highlighting some of America’s most talented young practitioners throughout.

This year, per custom, we’re honoring 40 generalists and 40 specialists, and in addition to getting their thoughts on the profession and their careers, we asked them about the enriching aspects of travel—its peerless ability to open our minds, make us see our very existence in new ways… and bring a fresh perspective home to enliven both our personal and professional lives.

Why travel? Well, for the 40 Under 40 photo shoot and gala venue this year, we selected the breathtaking Terminal 5 at John F. Kennedy Airport in New York, also known as the TWA Flight Center. Designed by famed Finnish-American architect Eero Saarinen in 1962 and renovated to a high period sheen in 2017, it’s a fitting backdrop for this year’s featured doctors—as ambitious and inquisitive a group of go-getters as we’ve ever showcased. We’re glad you’re here. Now sit back, relax and enjoy your journey through the pages ahead.

While dining on a rooftop with a view of the Duomo, my friend and I began speaking with an older couple next to us. They were celebrating their fiftieth anniversary. The Place That Changed Her Worldview: “South Korea. I went there to see a specific building by Zaha Hadid. Little did I know that South Korea is itself an architectural gem. They have such low tourism from outside Asia that a TV station asked me to do an interview and share what brought me to South Korea.”
Most Memorable Travel Experience: “I climbed a mountain surrounding the Fushimi Inari temple with a Japanese monk in Kyoto. The silence in the forest and listening to the breeze through the leaves was powerful. Travel’s Influence: “Every trip teaches you something about yourself. The lavender fields in southern France inspired me to plant lavender in my garden. I learned what quality coffee is in Colombia. In Italy I understood
that a good quality tomato can be a meal on its own. Solo backpacking taught me that I can live with very little and how to be self-sufficient.”

Why He Was Nominated: A master of taking time-tested concepts of occlusion and esthetics and blending them with modern techniques, Dr. Tsougranis in 2023 was selected to join the prestigious Dr. Dick Barnes Group to share his knowledge and expertise of cosmetic dentistry, occlusion and digital workflows via speaking engagements. A member of the American Academy of Cosmetic Dentistry, he’s pursuing further advanced education through the Kois Center.
Inspiration: “My parents and my wife. Seeing my parents’ work ethic from a young age instilled in me what it means to work hard and be passionate about what you do. My wife is my biggest supporter and always pushes me to work toward becoming the best in my professional and family life.”
Exciting New Trend: “Digital dentistry is moving so quickly and has completely changed the way we practice. It’s fun being a part of that change.”
The Place That Changed His Worldview: “Many years ago I took a mission trip to Nicaragua where I helped a local dentist provide care to people in a remote area. We had people who had never received dental care before. It made me realize how fortunate we are to have such easy access to medical care and medical providers.”
Most Memorable Travel Experience: “I was visiting northern Greece. I went during a slow time of the season and ended up meeting a tour guide while I was there. Because there weren’t many people there that time of the year, my wife and I were able to spend four days with him, and he showed us all around the region. At the end he bought us a parting gift as a thank-you for the great company. He and I have stayed in contact via social media through life milestones.”
Something People Don’t Know: “Greek was my first language, and I lived in Greece when I was younger for five years.”

Dustin WyldeAge: 38
City: Schaumburg, Illinois
Name of Practice: Advanced Dentistry
Education: DMD, University of Illinois–Chicago College of Dentistry
Why He Was Nominated: Originally waitlisted for dental school—he ended up being the last student in his class to get in—Dr. Wylde used his close call as motivation throughout dental school and into his career. One of his colleagues notes that “of the few team members who have left our office to work elsewhere, they and their families continue to receive dental treatment from Dr. Wylde.” He recently earned his Fellowship in the Academy of General Dentistry.
Inspiration: “My two boys. I live my life trying to make sure they are proud of me.”
Most Memorable Patient: “My first full mouth rehabilitation patient hadn’t smiled in years. She bet her sister $100 she couldn’t find one picture of her smiling. Now she has countless pictures with her smiling, and she’s an amazing ambassador for our office.”
The Place That Changed His Worldview: “Visiting Alaska and seeing firsthand the raw beauty of one of the last remaining American frontiers. To step away from modern conveniences and be present in such a natural setting helped me see beyond my very comfortable day-to-day life.”
Most Memorable Travel Experience: “My wife and I recently had the privilege of bringing our sons on vacation and visiting Honduras. It was the first time our boys had left the U.S., and their first time seeing that not everyone lives the way we do. We want to inspire them to continue to travel the world, to see other cultures and experience a different way of life in hopes that they will do what they can make others’ lives better and the world a more accepting place.”
Something People Don’t Know: “I was a competitive waterskier in college.”

Nickita R. Zaveri

@pristinesmilestn

Nickita R. ZaveriAge: 37
City: Knoxville, Tennessee
Name of Practice: Pristine Smiles
Education: DMD, University of Louisville School of Dentistry
Why She Was Nominated: Dr. Zaveri adeptly balances three major roles: wife, mother of two children under age 2 and business owner. When she bought her practice in 2022, it was, she says, a “toxic environment,” but through hard work she has transformed it into a “thriving, positive” practice for patients and her team alike. A Kois graduate, she has completed many advanced CE courses. “My practice is deeply personal, not corporate,” she says, “and I hold kindness and mutual respect as nonnegotiable values.”
Inspiration: “My husband. He holds me to a standard that challenges me in the best way. I’m also grateful to my parents and grandparents, who instilled in me strong values, hard work, the importance of family and spiritual grounding.”
Tools She Can’t Live Without: “Mirror defogger, rubber dam, Trios scanner.”
The Place That Changed Her Worldview: “Visiting developing countries has opened my eyes to how simple and fulfilling life can be without constant pressure to work or achieve. I’ve met people who have fewer material possessions but radiate gratitude for what they do have. At the same time, many of them dream of opportunities in the U.S., which reminds me that I am, in many ways, living the American Dream.”
Most Meaningful Travel Experience: “During my honeymoon in New Zealand, we took an Uber from Auckland to a remote hiking trail, and our driver
assured us we’d be able to call another Uber for the ride back. Then we finished the hike and realized there was no cell service. My husband found some kind locals who helped us. We ended up hitchhiking back—not quite the plan, but a story we’ll never forget.”
Travel’s Influence: I’ve explored many parts of the world and continue to enjoy new experiences whenever the opportunity arises. But I also value consistency and routine. Life has a way of coming full circle, and the universe brought me back to my hometown, where I’ve been able to set down roots.”
Something People Don’t Know: “I’ve never broken a bone. I enjoy playing video games. I can saber a champagne bottle as my party trick.”

Tool He Can’t Live Without: “Articulator. Old-school or virtual.”
Most Memorable Patient: “She had stopped by McDonald’s on the way to the practice and got a fish filet burger; she asked my assistant to let her know a minute or so before I was stepping in so that she could eat it and show me how poor the seal was underneath her dentures. Thankfully, we managed to take away the fish before the demo began.”

Most Memorable Travel Experience: “In South Korea, talking with a shop owner in a quieter, more traditional part of Seoul. She also gives back by teaching one day a month each at Thomas Jefferson Abington general practice residency and Penn Dental’s endo department. She opened her own practice last November.
Most Memorable Patient: “In dental school, I had a patient who drank water with chia seeds to suppress her appetite. When I went to do an extraction on her, I noticed one of the broken-down teeth had a chia seed lodged inside that was sprouting.”
The Place That Changed Her Worldview: “I participated in a dental mission trip to Jamaica in 2018. It changed how I felt about my career and my previously held assumptions about access to care and the value of saving natural dentition. Patients at the Helping Hands clinic in St. Elizabeth Parish stood in line for hours in 100-degree heat and humidity to be seen. They never complained and were incredibly kind and grateful.”
Most Memorable Travel Experience: “I got engaged to my husband in Paris after we graduated from dental school. We were traveling on a small budget before entering separate residency programs. After leaving Paris we stayed at an Airbnb in Amsterdam. The host was the sweetest elderly Dutch woman who gave us lovely relationship advice.”

He moved to Philadelphia to complete a four-year residency in oral surgery while I stayed in Boston for endodontics residency at Tufts. After my two-year program, I moved to Philly. Name of Practices: Poplar Pediatric Dentistry
Specialty: Pediatrics
Education: DDS, Indiana University School of Dentistry; MSD/residency, Riley Hospital for Children, Indianapolis
Why She Was Nominated: Although her primary practice in Zionsville (just outside Indianapolis) is bustling, she maintains a second practice in nearby Lebanon to treat an underserved community. She is the only pediatric dentist for miles around who accepts Medicaid. As Indiana’s public policy advocate, she regularly meets with

Inspiration: “It’s multifaceted and continues to evolve. It began with my hard-working parents, then drew from the encouragement of my husband, and now my kids have added an entirely new meaning to what I do. This plus the interactions with my little patients continue to inspire me daily.”
Tool She Can’t Live Without: “NEVI-1 scaler. This spoon-shaped scaler isn’t frightening to kids and can pop off calculus from those lower anterior teeth in a flash.”
The Place That Changed Her Worldview: “During a dental service-learning trip to Haiti, I had an experience that shifted my perspective on perseverance and access to care. A 10-year-old boy came to our ‘clinic’ with a toothache that had been bothering him for months. He had heard we were there just for the day and showed up, alone, hoping to have it treated. Unfortunately, because he didn’t have a guardian with him, we couldn’t proceed. He left quietly, only to return several hours later—running 45 minutes to his home and then back again, this time with a guardian by his side. His determination was humbling. It challenged my assumptions about ‘access to care’ and strengthened my commitment to serving those in underserved communities.”
